Carey Morton
Q: Where are you from?
A: I grew up in the small town of Piedmont SC where I had the fortunate opportunity to live close to nature, run through the forest with my dog, raft down rivers and learn to use my hands to craft things from the world around me. .
Q: What is your year/major? Have you studied anywhere besides Clemson?
A: I am a first year MFA student concentrating in Sculpture here at Clemson. I previously studied at Winthrop University where I received my BFA.
Q: How long have you been making art? What do you love most about creating art?
A: I have been making art on a professional level for around 6 years now but like all artists I’ve been creating things as far back as I can remember. I really enjoy the process of bringing something totally unique into the world, from a beginning drawing to a large-scale sculptural form.
Q: What themes do you pursue as an artist? How would you describe your design aesthetic/style?
A: My personal contemporary work deals with man’s relationship to nature, and the accepted understanding of the “self”. Melding natural materials, found objects, and diverse fabricated forms I create socio-political narrative sculptures that encourage understanding on both the outer and inner levels of consciousness. Shining a light on the microcosm vs. the macrocosm of perception. My aesthetic takes on a balance between the raw, visceral qualities of materials and the more subtle and formal elements involved in sculptural design.
Q: What do you like about your work? In general and for the selected piece.
A: I really enjoy the process of utilizing chance, mistakes, and the beauty of controlled imperfections to give each piece its own unique voice.
Q: What are you most excited about for this CSA season? What do you hope to gain by joining us as a share artist?
A: I am most excited about the opportunity to support my fellow artists and Colleagues in building up a great collaborative organization that continues to promote the arts and diverse craft.
Q: What are some other art related internships, demonstrations, gallery showings, or publications you have been involved with?
A: In addition to my collegiate studies I have also worked as a professional Blacksmith and metal fabricator for the past three years in Greenville SC. I was recently selected to hold solo exhibitions and gallery talks at Coker College and Lander University. I have been a part of the selected artists in the annual Artfield’s Show case in lake city SC, and have created numerous public works around the city of Greenville and Rock Hill SC.
