Deighton Abrams
Q: Where are you from?
A: My father was in the military so my family moved around quite a bit. I grew up mostly in Alaska but have lived in Texas, Georgia, Wyoming, and Montana.
Q: What is your year/major? Have you studied anywhere besides Clemson?
A: I am a second year MFA candidate concentrating in ceramics. I completed my BFA with a focus on ceramics at Armstrong State University in Savannah, GA and have also completed courses at Savannah College of Art and Design and University of Alaska Anchorage.
Q: How long have you been making art? What do you love most about creating art?
A: I’ve been pursuing art in earnest since middle school and I really enjoy the intersections between visual art and historical and scientific research.
Q: What themes do you pursue as an artist? How would you describe your design aesthetic/style?
A: Much of my work deals with human psychology and how it is affected by the surrounding natural landscape. I attempt to make these connections through imagery from my own experiences filtered through a combination of high-brow and low-brow influences.
Q: What do you like about your work? In general and for the selected piece.
A: I truly love the ceramic medium. Making sculpture in clay is my preferred method of illustrating my ideas but functional pottery and the ability to craft an object in day to day rituals has always held a special significance for me.
Q: What are you most excited about for this CSA season? What do you hope to gain by joining us as a share artist?
A: This season of CSArt is pretty unique as we have a strong variety of media represented. I think the mix of functional and non-functional works is a great way for Clemson to show the diversity of talents situated in the art department.
Q: What are some other art related internships, demonstrations, gallery showings, or publications you have been involved with?
A: Gallery S.P.A.C.E. in Savannah, GA has a great ceramics program that I was lucky enough to be a part of in the past. They have a ceramic cup show going up very soon and a number of Clemson artists are represented. Definitely worth checking out.
