En Iwamura
Q: Where are you from?
A: I am from Kyoto, Japan.
Q: What is your year & major?
A: I am a MFA student focusing on ceramics and this is my third semester.
Q: How long have you been making ceramics or other art in general? Have you studied anywhere besides Clemson?
A: I have been focusing on ceramics for the past 6 years since undergraduate school.
Q: How would you describe your design aesthetic/style?
A: I am trying to work on multiple different styles. However, my work is generally round with an organic shape and gentle form because of my hand-building style. Using only my hands deeply effects my impressions in the clay.
Q: What do you love most about ceramics?
A: I enjoy the character of the material. It is flexible, unmediated, and free which fits my building style. However, clay is also an uncontrollable and unpredictable material. I am mostly attracted to clay because it is both a friendly and mysterious material.
Q: What are you inspirations? In general and for the selected piece.
A: I wanted to share a sculptural piece instead of a functional piece. Most people picture ceramics as functional cups, bowls, and dishes. People tend to be more interested in purchasing functional ware; I want to make the idea of buying sculptural work more familiar. Through this opportunity I was challenged to make the audience reconsider what art is.
Q: What are you most excited about for this CSA season?
A: I am so excited about my opportunity for my investigation, as well as sharing my pieces with many people who do not know my work or me yet. I am so happy and want to say thank you all for giving me this chance.
