Deighton Abrams
Q: Where are you from?
A: I've lived a lot of places but to sum it up: a 50/50 split between the Far North and the Deep South.
Q: What is your year & major?
A: I am a first year ceramics graduate student.
Q: How long have you been making ceramics or other art in general? Have you studied anywhere besides Clemson?
A: I've considered myself an artist for as long as I can remember. Drawing has always been important to me and I initially wanted to illustrate my own graphic novels. The first time I touched clay was 3 1/2 years ago during my undergraduate studies in Savannah, GA. I haven't stopped working with clay since.
Q: How would you describe your design aesthetic/style?
A: I would describe my style as post-academic-low-brow-inspired-expressionist-ceramics.
Q: What do you love most about ceramics?
A: Ceramics has one of the longest legible histories of human art making and combined with the versatile ceramic surface, I can incorporate, drawing and design into tactile hand made objects that can be used daily (or not).
Q: What are you inspirations? In general and for the selected piece.
A: A lot of my inspiration comes from the natural world but filtered through a lifetime of pop culture obsessions, namely black and white films and Japanese manga as well as the engravings of 19th and early 20th century artists such as Gustave Dore and Rockwell Kent.
Q: What are you most excited about for this CSA season?
A: I am really excited to be among a great group of artists who push the realm of functional wares in very different ways, each creating their own personal atmosphere.
