Christopher Phillips
Q: Where are you from?
A: I am from Simpsonville, SC.
Q: What is your year/major? Have you studied anywhere besides Clemson?
A: I am a Senior English Major, Art Minor with a focus in Photography.
Q: How long have you been making art? What do you love most about creating art?
A: I started taking photos after my Junior year in high school as a hobby, but it didn't become a passion of mine until my Freshman year of college when I began taking photo classes. Growing up, I had always sought a creative outlet, but I was never able to find one. I loved other art forms, but I never excelled at them. Photography is my way of expressing myself while also satisfying that artistic craving.
Q: What themes do you pursue as an artist? How would you describe your design aesthetic/style?
A: In my photos, I want to challenge how spectators think about the usual norms surrounding photography by taking those customs and altering them how I see fit. Film also plays a large part in how my work comes about. Because of this, much of my work is cinematic and narrative, working to depict a clear story in and around its subjects.
Q: What do you like about your work? In general and for the selected piece.
A: For this piece, I am most excited about getting back in the darkroom and, for the first time, doing such a large scale printing. I think this will challenge my printing abilities while also teaching me new ways to produce in the darkroom.
Q: What are you most excited about for this CSA season? What do you hope to gain by joining us as a share artist?
A: I'm very much looking forward to connecting with my fellow CSA Artists all of whom I believe I can learn something valuable from.
Q: What are some other art related internships, demonstrations, gallery showings, or publications you have been involved with?
A: Here at Clemson, I have had the opportunity to work with both The Chronicle and Decipher Magazine, in both editorial and creative roles. Also, I had two pieces of work selected for the "Reflections" show last Spring where I won the "Anonymous Purchase Award" for my photograph, "Filling the Shadows."
